Mobile Communications - Samsung Develops First TD-SCDMA Handset
December 17, 2004
Samsung Electronics recently unveiled a TD-SCDMA (Time Division Synchronous Code Division Multiple Access) handset, a positive step for the Chinese 3G standard.

The TD-SCDMA handset was jointly developed by Samsung, Datang Mobile of China, and Royal Philips Electronics of the Netherlands. It is equipped with an exclusive modem chip that enables wireless transmission from the Internet and better video streaming quality.

Samsung Electronics received patents to over 50 related technologies for the development of the 3G phone, such as those for linking to TD-SCDMA, GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications), and GPRS (Gateway GPRS Radio Service Network) networks.

The Korean vendor is planning to develop by March 2005 a multi-band dual mode mobile phone that can support TD-SCDMA/GSM/GPRS technologies. It is now in discussions with China's Ministry of Information Industry for providing handsets necessary for pilot service, which is slated for the second quarter.
